ThemayorofNewYorkoncesaid,“ImmigrationcontinuestoshapetheuniquecharacteranddrivetheeconomicengineofNewYorkCity.”HebelievesthatimmigrantsareattheheartofwhatmakesNewYorkgreat.InEurope,bycontrast,itismuchmorecommontohearpoliticiansworryaboutthelossof“unity”thatimmigrationbringstotheirsocieties.Inthequartercenturysince1970,theUntiedStatesadmittedabout125millionlegalimmigrants,andhasabsorbedthemintoitssocialstructureswithaneasebeyondtheimaginationofothernations.Sincetheseimmigrantsarepurposefulandhard-working,theywillhelpAmericatomakeafreshstartinthenextcentury.
